Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been fired by Parliament today following a no-confidence vote.
This vote came after the crisis that had ‘occupied’ the country for the last nine months. The no-confidence motion was voted in favor by 174 officials and this is the first time a Pakistani prime minister has been fired in a no-confidence motion filed by the opposition.
Khan lost his parliamentary majority after lawmakers from his party and key allies such as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, a party based in the port city of Karachi, left the ruling coalition.
In his first comment after losing the no-confidence vote, ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote on Twitter on Sunday: “Pakistan became an independent state in 1947; but the struggle for freedom begins again today against a foreign conspiracy of regime change. “It is always the people of the country who defend their sovereignty and democracy.”
