French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has expressed optimism about reviving the nuclear deal with Iran, but has warned that “time is running out” for international negotiators.
“I continue to believe that we can reach an agreement. “Some progress has been made in recent days,” Le Drian told BFM television.
“We have started in a positive direction in recent days, but time is of the essence, because unless an agreement is reached quickly, we will have nothing to negotiate about.”
The United States, which pulled out of the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions on the Iranian leadership, said this week that “modest progress” had been made in a round of talks that began on January 3.
Talks began late last year after a break in which Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi, was elected.
Since the withdrawal of the US from the agreement, Iran has started to gradually disregard the agreement.
Iranian authorities are insisting that the United States lift all sanctions before returning to the deal.
Western leaders, who have called for the agreement to be implemented, have resisted specific deadlines, but have warned that there are “weeks, not months” left to reach an agreement.
Iran has consistently denied allegations by Israel and the West that it is developing nuclear-capable weapons.
