A large fire has fallen on deck 3 of the Grimaldi Euroferry Olympia passenger ferry sailing in the sea area near Igoumenitsa under the Italian flag.
The ship is now located northeast of the island of Ereikousa, near Corfu, and had an itinerary from Igoumenitsa to Brindisi. There are 237 passengers and 51 crew members on board. Three Greek Coast Guard ships, tugboats and other nearby ships arrived at the scene.
The ferry captain has requested and ordered its abandonment and the passengers have already boarded the lifeboats. According to the Deputy Minister of Transport of Greece, Mr. Katsafados, so far there is no information to injure, while three helicopters are operating in the area and a Ydra frigate of the Greek Navy is going there.
Atmospheric conditions in the area are good. The 237 passengers and 51 crew members of the Euroferry Olympia are said to be all already in lifeboats and their collection from other vessels has begun. The cause of the fire is not yet known, which seems to be still out of control. In the same area in December 2014 a fire broke out on the Norman Atlantic ferry traveling from Igoumenitsa to Ancona where 29 people lost their lives.
