The pandemic directly affected the reduction of the number of births in Albania.
Instat data show that last year the number of births reached 28,075 babies, or about 486 births less than in 2019.
Last year, only three regions of the country marked an increase in births, while the rest fell, where the most worrying phenomenon is in the region of Gjirokastra with only 504 births during 2020.
For social affairs expert Costa Bajraba this may be related to the insecurities and low incomes of young couples. This drastic decline in births is worrying, he added, and should be addressed with long-term policies.
“Births have decreased by about 500-600 births a year. Efforts have been made to encourage their growth even through policies such as bonuses, but that do not solve the problem. I think we need more sustainable new policies for young couples, how to create education opportunities, employment for young couples. Provide them with easy housing or credit opportunities. They are longer-term solutions”, Bajraba.
Since 1990, Albania has seen a strong contraction in fertility, with 82,000 babies at the time. While during the period between the two censuses 2001 – 2011 their number has decreased continuously from about 53 thousand in 2001 to 34 thousand in 2011.
According to Instat projections, in the most negative scenario that predicts a further contraction of fertility and increase in the number of deaths, it is expected that Albania in 2031 will have a natural increase of -6.2 thousand people.
