A Pakistani court has sentenced to death a Muslim woman who was found guilty of sending blasphemous messages and cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad to a friend’s phone.
The court in the town of Ravalpindi has ordered that Aneeqa Ateeq, 26, “should hang around her neck until she dies”.
She was also sentenced to long-term imprisonment.
Ateeq was arrested in May 2020 and charged with publishing “blasphemous material” on her WhatsApp platform, court documents say.
According to them, when a friend asked her to change her status, the accused sent the same messages to her.
Images depicting the Prophet Muhammad are considered blasphemous to many Muslims.
According to the US Commission on Religious Freedom, about 80 people are believed to be incarcerated in Pakistan on blasphemy-related charges, half of whom face imprisonment or the death penalty.
Critics have said blasphemy laws in Pakistan are not properly enforced and this charge is often abused to resolve personal disputes.
Even unsubstantiated allegations of blasphemy could spark widespread violence and protests in Pakistan.
Last month, a Sri Lankan factory manager was tortured and publicly burned in Pakistan’s Punjab province after several pages of the Koran were found in the victim’s trash can.
