12 artists from different countries of the world have spent a week in an art camp in Gjirokastra.
They were inspired by Gjirokastra to create their works that include elements of traditional decor, crafts, handicrafts, architecture, vegetation, history and famous personalities.
This camp, in addition to an exhibition of potential and creative diversity, brought new perspectives, especially in installation and work that naturally harmonized with the exhibition environment in the Gjirokastra bazaar.
Katerina comes from Ukraine. She has temporarily left the war to attend some international art events but says she has left her son and mother behind in Kiev. Gjirokastra from her point of view came up with the image of escalating roofs, a work that also attracted attention for its abstract elements.
“This is a city with an extraordinary architecture. I was inspired by stone, roofs streets but there is something to the building elements that is very potent. The way the flats stand on each other’s backs is also special. I come from Kiev which is now a little quieter compared to other areas where there is still fighting. I have a son and a mother and the war has left trauma to everyone. “It’s very painful to lose friends and relatives unjustly.”
The camp is realized within Artech a program of Creative Europe and in its second edition was an invitation for young creators from different countries to become promoters through art intertwined with handicrafts, crafts and local tradition.
The ideas that were exhibited in the historic center of Gjirokastra artistically addressed aspects of daily life where artists worked alongside local artisans to finalize works where culture interacts and educates.
