At least 117 people have died in the Brazilian city of Petropolis as a result of floods and landslides.
Among the victims are 13 children, local media reported.
Local authorities have activated more than a dozen alarms to warn of torrential rains even on Thursday evening.
Blast crews have halted searches for missing persons due to the risk of other landslides.
Police have said 116 people are still missing.
On Tuesday, Petropolis faced more than six hours of rainfall.
State Governor Claudio Castro has said Petropolis has faced the heaviest rain since 1932.
Dozens of houses are covered in mud.
Rio de Janeiro and surrounding regions are often hit by torrential rains in the first three months of the year, January, February and March.
In 2011, more than 900 people died as a result of a storm in the mountainous regions of Rio de Janeiro, including Petropolis.
It is considered the biggest natural disaster that has ever happened in Brazil.
