The Assembly of Kosovo approved on Thursday the Draft Law for the ratification of the co-financing agreement for the feasibility study and project-idea for the Durrës-Prishtina railway line.
The Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, Liburn Aliu, announced during the July 21 session that the total cost for the realization of the feasibility study and project idea for the construction of the railway line is expected to be over 1.9 million euros.
For this project, Minister Aliu said that 980 thousand euros will be allocated from Kosovo’s budget, while 1 million euros will be allocated from Albania’s budget.
“We are currently at a stage where we can realize the project and open the possibility of creating this line, which can then be associated with many other projects that would enable the circulation of goods from the Port of Durrës throughout the Western Balkan region, and that Pristina would be the main center of distribution of these goods”, said Aliu.
The realization of the Durrës-Prishtina railway line would enable the launch of the next project, which is the construction of two new commercial ports: Porto Romano in Durrës and Porti i Thatë in Pristina.
This project was presented at the joint meeting of the Government of Kosovo and that of Albania, which was held on June 20 in Prishtina.
According to the presentation made by Eric Smit, director of the Dutch company “Royal Haskoning”, which made the project, the Dry Port in Pristina would be used for customs clearance of goods, which would then ease the load at the seaport of Durrës.
The investment project in Porto Romano is calculated to have a positive impact on Albania’s gross domestic product, from 3 percent to 6 percent, while there is still no exact calculation for Kosovo.
