Ukrainians on Sunday marked a bleak Orthodox Easter under attack by Russian occupiers, praying for those on the front lines of the war and others stranded in cities such as Mariupol.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a speech from St. Sophia Cathedral in central Kiev.
Zelensky: Last year we celebrated Easter at home because of the pandemic. This year too we celebrate the resurrection of Christ not as we once did. Because of another virus. Because of the plague called war. Last year and this year’s threat are united, but nothing can defeat Ukraine. God save all Ukrainians! We did not attack anyone, so give us protection. We have never destroyed other nations, so do not let anyone destroy us.
Although some cathedrals are part of the Moscow Patriarchate, residents who went to pray say they do not come to a specific church, but “to God.”
“I do not care if it is the Russian or Ukrainian patriarchate, what matters is that there is no war. Russia must be ousted“, Says a Ukrainian.
“We came to God, not to a specific church. This is what matters to us“, Says another.
Orthodox Easter is marked exactly two days after Russia launched the war in Ukraine.
