Sali Berisha’s first official visit outside Albania after the elections he organized to be declared president was in the east of the European continent and on the border with Russia. But his trip to Baku was neither the first nor the real news.
It was soon learned in Azerbaijan that President Ilir Meta had also traveled. In two announcements a few seconds apart, one after the other, the press office of the head of state and that of Berisha’s office, distributed images from the same place where the two were located. Both, invited to the forum being held in Baku on the challenges of world order. Formally both guests separately.
But the challenges of the two former allies are by no means global. Ilir Meta seems impatient for his return to active politics, a return that has not left Sali Berisha indifferent, isolated from both the internationals and the political opponent. What unites the two challenges is the stance of both in opposition. Formally still separately. But, will Meta join Berisha, after July 24?
Sources from the presidential delegation claimed that they were aware of Berisha’s presence at the same Summit, but when asked if there was a meeting, they answered with a smile. The common time and place where the two former political allies are today, made a natural meeting of theirs, in a Summit where there are few people who speak Albanian. But, whether they meet or not, does not depend only on them.
Berisha has not hidden that he is looking for a new cooperation with Ilir Meta. But the head of state, in the last weeks of his term as President, seemed to soften with the Americans who welcomed him to their residence in Tirana. Ilir Meta has stated that he can not wait to wake up from his dream and return to the political battle, but it is not yet known if this battle will start from Baku or Tirana.
