The secretary general of oil-exporting countries and the president of Venezuela today urged world leaders not to use oil as a weapon.
At their meeting at the presidential palace in Caracas, Nicolas Maduro and Mohammed Barkindo agreed that oil “should not be politicized”.
“I take this opportunity to call on leaders to respect the basic principles of OPEC, oil should be depoliticized, not used for politics or sanctions,” Barkindo said.
His comments were later echoed by Maduro, who signaled that oil and gas should be exempt from “any sanctions.”
“We are seeing that sanctions against Russian oil and gas are turning into a boomerang for the economy and the quality of life in the US, Europe and the world,” Venezuela said.
Barkindo has been in Venezuela for a week as he visited the country’s refineries, accompanied by Venezuelan Oil Minister Tareck El Aissami.
