The government again this year fulfilled another legal obligation, the indexation of pensions.
Due to the increase in interest rates and the devaluation of the lek, the government decided not to index them with the annual inflation rate as required by law, but with its current rate. For the Minister of Finance, this is a pretty big help for retirees:
“All categories of pensions are indexed by 3.3%. The effect on the budget will be 3.3 billion ALL. The initial forecast was for the approximate value of 2.4%, which according to the law had to be done. “Due to the prices for the pensioners’ basket, we set the average for the quarter of February.”
But the supplement is not for everyone. The government, at the beginning of this year took a decision for 576 thousand pensioners, who receive less than 15,000 ALL, to be made an additional payment of 3,000 ALL to cope with the increase in prices. Nearly 100,000 other retirees, according to the government, are rich enough to face this global price crisis on their own.
“According to the accounts, it is 2500 lekë additional expenses for an average family as a result of basket products. We have thought to give 3000 lekë for 576 thousand people for 3 months, this is added to other elements of the package such as support for fuel for transport, to increase fuel prices for farmers and support that holds the main voice for electricity. “
But according to calculations, the average increase of money in total for pensioners ranges from 200 to 1000 ALL. They will be received in the next installment, in April. According to the United Nations, for a person not to be considered poor, he has to spend $ 5.5 a day. In the best case, with the addition of pensions for the next three months, an Albanian pensioner can be considered non-poor only one day a month.
Meanwhile the effect of the supplement on the state budget is only $ 25 million. Or the price of building a kilometer of road in the Great Ring of Tirana.
