Even in Germany, “Omicron” is already the dominant variant of the Covid virus 19.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports in its latest weekly report that the figure for all cases has already reached 73 percent of Omikron virus infections. But there are still big differences across the country. According to RKI, the share of Omicron infections was only 11% in Mecklenburg-Pomerania, while in Bremen it was 96 percent.
The RKI Institute warns that a high number of infections is expected in Germany in the coming weeks, including those who have been vaccinated and cured. At the same time, RKI points out that initial studies show a lower percentage of people who need to be hospitalized, compared to Delta variant infections. But there is still not enough data to give final assessments regarding the severity of the disease and the consequences of the Omikron variant.
Problems with fast tests
As a result of the dominance of the new variant, a representative of a medical association in Germany, Ute Teichert, warns that rapid tests are not appropriate to determine whether or not someone is affected by the virus. “As long as it is unclear which rapid tests reliably detect the Omikron variant, it is problematic to use rapid tests as an alternative to PCR tests to determine that the person has recovered,” said the president of the Federal Association of Physicians. Public Health (BVÖGD). “If we do not have enough PCR tests, the situation will be more difficult.”
Under the new quarantine rules agreed by the federal and state governments, infected people or those who have had contact with infected people can be tested after seven days with a PCR test or an antigen test and can shorten the quarantine period by three days if the test is negative.
Teichert warns that the situation could get out of control and health offices could not track all flows of infections. Therefore, a significant increase in office staff is required, within a short period of time. “We will not have a clear picture in the coming weeks,” she said. Many offices now do not have the situation under full supervision.
The incidence of new infections with the Corona virus has reached a new level. RKI reports that the seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants has gone to 470.6. In the last 24 hours alone, 92,223 new cases of Corona virus infections have been registered in Germany, which is a record number since the beginning of the pandemic. One week ago there were “only” 56,335 new infections.
