The ‘Wolf Volcano’ on the island of Isabela in the Ecuadorian archipelago Galapagos has erupted for the second time in seven years.
But officials at popular natural parks said rare animal species have been rescued from the lava.
At the site of the erupting volcano lives among other species, the pink iguana of which only 211 remain on Isabela Island.
The eruption of the volcano on the largest island of the Galapagos started at midnight on Thursday, said the center of the national park.
The team of researchers and watchdogs said the 1,707-meter-high volcano has released smoke and gas at about 3,800 meters high as lava is flowing its southern and southeastern sites.
The volcano is the highest in the Galapagos, but is at least 100 miles from the nearest human community.
The Galapagos Islands are located about 1,000 kilometers off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific, and preserve many unique species of flora and fauna.
