The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said Iran had agreed to extend access to UN inspectors at its nuclear sites for another three months.
However, the deal negotiated between Gross and Iranian officials will give them less access and prevent them from conducting early inspections. Iran is changing its policy after the United States failed to lift sanctions imposed by former US President Donald Trump on its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.
With this agreement, Iran has agreed to curb its nuclear activity in exchange for easing international sanctions. Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Iran, which has also begun to enrich uranium beyond the permitted limits, says it will not return to the terms of the agreement until the US fully complies with it.
US President Joe Biden insists Iran act first. The crisis over Iran’s nuclear program has been on the international agenda for almost 20 years. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, while the US and other world powers suspect it is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons.
