North Korea allegedly launched a ballistic missile designed to be launched by a submarine on Saturday, May 7, the South Korean military said.
South Korea’s chief of staff said the launch occurred from waters near the port city of Sinpo, where North Korea has a large shipyard building submarines, but was not immediately told how far the missile flew.
It was also unclear whether the launch would have involved a current submarine or an underwater testing platform.
Japan’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed the launch of the missile, but did not immediately release details.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ordered officials to prepare for all “unpredictable situations” and called for increased security for aircraft and ships.
The launch of this ballistic missile was reportedly North Korea’s first demonstration of a submarine-launched ballistic missile system since October last year, when it tested a new short-range missile from Yongung – its submarine. only capable of firing such a missile.
For North Korea, this was the first test of such a missile since 2019.
