North Korea today marked the 10th anniversary of the death of former leader Kim Jong Il with a memorial service, which was attended by thousands of people.
At the ceremony was of course the son of the deceased, the current dictator Kim Jong Un.
Kim Jong Il had ruled the country for 17 years until his death in December 2011, before handing over power to his son.
The anniversary of his death was preceded by several days of mourning with harsh measures in place, including stopping and laughing in the streets, according to sources.
North Koreans were banned from laughing, consuming alcohol or having fun for 11 days because of the former leader’s tenth birthday.
“We should not consume alcohol, laugh or have fun these days,” said a North Korean from the northeastern border town of Siniju, according to Radio Free Asia.
The mourning period is held every year for Kim Jong Il and lasts 10 days, but this year it was 11 days to mark the tenth anniversary of his death.
