Drug cartel attackers in Mexico have killed nine people mourning a dead man in jail last week, officials announced today.
The killings took place in two attacks in the northern city of Ciudad Juárez.
The attackers had initially flooded inside a private house where friends and family had gathered for the death of the prisoner, where two women and a man were killed.
Hours later they attacked the premises where the funeral of the same person was taking place, where six other participants of the ceremony were killed.
Witnesses said the attackers stormed the house, which also functions as an evangelical church, while the priest was delivering a speech. They described scenes of panic when the bandits opened fire.
Among those killed was a 12-year-old boy and his father.
Officials have not released the name of the inmate for whom the funeral was being held, but the prosecutor said he was killed Wednesday while in custody in Chihuahua.
His body was then returned for burial in Ciudad Juárez.
Ciudad Juárez is located on Mexico’s border with the United States and is one of the cities with the highest homicide rates.
In 2021, an average of four people were killed every day, according to local prosecutors.
Most of the killings are linked to rivalry between drug gangs fighting for territory, the prosecutor’s office says.
