Several hours of fighting took place last night in the Libyan capital Tripoli as the prime minister elected by the rival parliament in the East tried to take over the institutions, which led to the clash of militant opposition groups.
According to reports, Fati Bashaga attempted to take control of the government from his UN-recognized rival, Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh, who refuses to step down.
Bashaga made the failed attempt after being appointed prime minister by the eastern rival parliament in the town of Tobruk.
He entered Tripoli yesterday with his forces after almost two months of stalemate between the two Libyan administrations, but withdrew, according to his statement “to maintain the security of the citizens”.
In a few hours of fighting heavy gunfire was heard in the capital in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and in the morning on the streets there was no ordinary traffic.
Fighting was reported both in the suburbs and in the central areas of Tripoli.
The North African country has been in chaos and crisis since the 2014 war which divided the administration into two hostile factions.
