US F-22 fighter jets have arrived in the United Arab Emirates as part of their defense deal with the United States, a move that follows a series of rocket attacks these days by Huthi rebels in Yemen.
The planes landed at Al-Dafra air base in Abu Dhabi, where about 2,000 US troops are stationed, ready to intervene in response to attacks by Houthis, which surprised last month when they fired missiles – the first strike of its kind since the entry of US forces in Iraq in 2003. Through a force demonstration, the US is showing that it will not allow Iranian-backed rebels to cross the red lines.
The US Department of Defense announced that the rapid deployment of these fifth generation fighter jets was done in coordination with the Crown Prince, Mohammed Al Nahyan. Photos released by the U.S. Air Force showed at least six F-22s on the runway at Al-Dafra.
They will join the coalition air force of the allied coalition in the region, while the US will also help the Emirates improve interceptors used to shoot down approaching missiles.
Recent attacks by Houthi rebels have brought to the fore the failure of UN-led mediation efforts to end Yemen’s civil war, which began in 2015.
