A new subtype of the Omicron coronavirus variant is spreading at lightning speed in Denmark, the United Kingdom, Sweden, India and many other countries of the world.
The exact impact of genome mutations is still unclear.
What is already known from the first variant of Omicron BA.1, is that it is much more contagious than previous coronavirus strains.
Of the new subtype, BA.2 has infected at least 400 people during the first 10 days of January in Britain, and has already been detected in more than 40 countries around the globe.
The PANGO directory of coronaviruses, which is regularly updated by scientists from the universities of Oxford, Edinburgh and Cambridge, ranks Denmark as the most affected area, with 79% of cases detected so far.
It is followed by the United Kingdom, India, Sweden and Singapore. The danger posed by omicron BA.2 remains still unknown to scientists. The rapid spread of the new subtype suggests that it may be even more contagious than the original Omicron variant.
The UK Health Insurance Agency (UKHSA) has classified BA.2 as a “supervised variant”.
It’s the nature of viruses to evolve and change, so it should be expected that we will continue to see new variants emerge as the pandemic continues, ”said Meera Chand, UKHSA Incident Director.
“Our ongoing genomic surveillance allows us to detect them and assess whether they are important,” she added.
