Democrat Congressman Madison Cawthorn and his wife Cristina are divorcing after just eight months of marriage, while the conservative politician admits that the election in Congress has changed his life “overnight”.
“When my wife Cristina and I were engaged, I was not a member of Congress. “I thought I should serve there and we both agreed to run,” the 26-year-old, paralyzed from the bottom half, said in a statement.
“The victory was unprecedented, but overnight our lives changed,” he continued, in a statement issued by his representatives.
“Change was fast and difficult, a lifestyle we had not planned. “From the beginning we had decided to fight for our marriage, but we realized that it was an unattainable balance that pointed out irreparable differences between us,” he explains.
The couple were married in April on the seventh anniversary of the car accident that left Cawthorn paralyzed and in a wheelchair.
At the time, the congressman called marriage “the greatest honor, privilege, and adventure of my life.”
The pair were seen everywhere with each other during their engagement a year ago, despite some rumors of Cawthorn’s suspicious sexual behavior when he had been to university.
The latter were also raised during his campaign for Congress in 2020, when some women accused Cawthorn of inviting them “for a car ride” where he was accused of then making sexual advancements.
Cawthorn has denied the allegations, saying “I have never done anything wrong sexually in my life.”
Since his marriage Cawthorn has stressed that his role as a husband comes before the office in Congress, even if it means losing votes.
With this argument in May he defended the loss of 15 votes within the week, as it was “the honeymoon in Dubai.”
“I always have to choose whether to spend time with Nancy Pelosi or my beautiful wife, so I always choose Cristina,” he said, but the split certainly shows that he now has to spend time with the Democratic speaker of Congress, who indeed it is not beautiful but quite more powerful.
