Tirana is successfully piloting new technology for cleaning the city. From the meeting of the Municipal Council of Tirana, Mayor Veliaj stated that in the capital is continuing the placement of new metal containers that will replace those plastic, which are even more resistant.
“We have started to implement a new technology for waste collection. There are actually 3 innovations. First, in most of the city, you will see that the bins have been replaced by polycarbonate plastic, to metal. We have had extraordinary cases of vandalism. “Those who throw tigers with stones and count their teeth, are also those who burn the bins”, declared Veliaj.
According to him, it is a contingent that tries to vandalize the city and test who is stronger, civilization or ignorance. “Civilization is stronger. “Because civilization always thinks of another way to deal with ignorance”, stressed Veliaj. He explained that in most of the territory are containers with two lids. “In the part inside the Middle Ring, there will be almost armored containers, which have only one magnetic head. Throwing garbage in these containers works similarly to putting envelopes in mailboxes. So, the individual after the moment of entering the waste in the respective space, the sheet will be closed again to avoid their exit and burning “, said the mayor of Tirana.
Meanwhile, in the tourist area of the city near the center, the Municipality of Tirana is placing underground containers for waste collection. Currently such technology is not applied either in Verona or Vicenza in Italy. “For the tourist area, we are piloting what are called underground bins, with a size 5 times larger than the physical bins. It means that there is less need to change, but it also allows us an aesthetic effect. When the day comes when the complaint comes to the municipality: The tourists drove us crazy! It means it is a good day for the city. Until yesterday they said: The garbage or the problems of the city drove us crazy. Today we are in a situation where some are getting stressed that we have a lot of tourists. This is a good problem to have. “But even for this fact, where there are hooligans who come for sports or even large flows of tourists, the presence of containers on the surface, can be replaced very well with underground bins”, added Veliaj.
He expressed optimism that new technologies in cleaning the city will be welcomed by citizens, and called for the distancing of political parties from the burning and destruction of the city. “I am a lifelong believer and optimist and I believe that most of the citizens of Tirana do not stone the tiger, nor do they deal with the tiger’s teeth, as they have much more important problems to deal with, nor do they burn the bins or uproot the trees. It is only a matter of time before that minority that is becoming smaller and smaller is civilized. “As long as the political parties will distance themselves from the burning and destruction of the city, I believe that things will be a little easier on this front”, said Veliaj.
