Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO is difficult.
Finland announces that without Sweden it will also give up membership, while Sweden is being blocked by Turkey.
This statement was made by the President of Finland during the visit of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
But the NATO chief tried to look to the future with optimism.
“The membership of Finland and Sweden would strengthen our alliance and the northern region of Europe. Our allies are already seeing what the next steps for enlargement will be. “But we must take into account all the concerns of the allies, including Turkey, which complains about the PKK terrorist group,” he said.
Finland and Sweden sought to lift neutrality after many years due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
The membership of the two northern European countries will most likely be on the table at the NATO summit to be held in Madrid in late June, but no final decision is expected there either.
