600 new enterprises with foreign and joint venture capital opened in the country last year, bringing their total number to 6,635 entities, the highest figure ever recorded.
Most of them over 5700 entities are small enterprises employing 1 to 9 people that have resulted in growth this period, followed by businesses with 10 to 49 employees that were reduced. While only about 300 foreign businesses have over 50 employees.
Statistics show that trade continues to dominate the vast majority of foreign business activity, more than half of which is dominated by European Union countries, followed by services and industry.
But, recently there is an increased interest of foreign investors to invest in ‘Information and Communication’. Last year, 97 new businesses were registered in this sector, bringing their number to 528 in total at the end of 2021, with a significant increase compared to 2020.
Ventures with Italian and Greek owners and co-owners account for almost half of the total number of foreign and joint businesses in Albania, entities that are mainly concentrated in the two largest regions of the country, in Tirana and Durrës.
Behind them are businesses owned and co-owned by Kosovo that after falling in the pandemic year in 2020, returned to growth last year, while foreign and joint ventures from Turkey operating in the country have continued to decline for the fourth consecutive year .
Last year, together with foreign companies, a total of about 15 thousand new businesses were opened in the country, bringing the number of active businesses in the country to 118,627.
