More than 200,000 birds have been wiped out in the Netherlands due to bird flu, the Dutch agriculture ministry announced.
“On the farms in the northern town of Grootschermer and Willemstad, which belonged to the same company, about 216,000 chickens were slaughtered,” said the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
Due to care in the fight against a very dangerous and contagious disease, transport between poultry farms has been suspended.
“Samples have been taken from other farms, while developments are being closely monitored,” the ministry added.
Avian influenza is a contagious bird disease caused by certain types of influenza A virus. Influenza virus is highly variable and undergoes constant genetic changes (mutations and gene changes between species) and occurs in a number of large subtypes and species, of which only a small number lead to pronounced diseases in birds.
Most cases of bird flu in humans are associated with direct or indirect contact with infected live or dead birds.
Since being first reported in Hong Kong in 1997, the disease has been responsible for epidemics and deaths in 16 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
