While the world is facing the war in Ukraine, an exhibition on “The Fates of the Survivors in Mathausen” was opened at the Archaeological Museum of Durrës. Photos, documents and testimonies shed light on the consequences of the war and the human stories of Albanians sent to Nazi extermination camps.
Stefan Konduri was one of the survivors of the infamous Mathauzen camp who was arrested along with hundreds of other Albanians in Durrës in November 1943, and was forced to burn in the crematorium his comrades, some dead and others half alive.
Even Faslli Cekaj, the descendant of one of the survivors of the infamous camp, remembers from the stories of his father who came out alive after the escape, while he says that memory is the best way to protect oneself and not repeat history.
The exhibition will remain open until April 11 in Durrës. The history witnessed in it is not only a memory and reverence for those who are no more, but also a call not to repeat history. It is a reflection on the consequences of war and the need for peace in a world troubled by conflict and most recently deeply shaken by the war in Ukraine and its aftermath.
