Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny sent his first message from prison after being transferred from a Moscow center to the Vladimir region in mid-February. In the message posted on Instagram on Wednesday, Navalny said that he is in Detention Center No. 3 in the city of Kolchugino and that he is having a good time with his cellmates.
“Everything is fine with me,” said Navalny, adding that he and his cell mates should dry the bread, as they are not allowed to buy food from the detention center shop. Navalny was arrested in Moscow in January, shortly after returning from Germany, where he recovered from nerve agent poisoning.
He was poisoned in August, on a flight to Siberia, while Western laboratories have indicated that the agent used in the attack was Noviçok. Navalny has blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for ordering the attack, but the Kremlin has denied involvement.
In early February, a court in Moscow found that Navlny, while in Germany, had violated the conditional sentence previously imposed in a case of embezzlement.
The court has ordered Navalny to serve two and a half years in prison. On Tuesday, the United States and the European Union sanctioned several Russian officials for alleged involvement in Navalny’s poisoning. Reacting to the sanctions, Moscow has instructed the West “not to play with fire.”
