At the extraordinary NATO summit on March 24, which will be attended by Prime Minister Edi Rama, the military alliance will announce the deployment of four new NATO battle groups in Eastern Europe – in Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said this represents a major increase in the military alliance’s presence in the region, doubling the number of existing combat groups.
“I expect the leaders to agree to strengthen NATO’s position in all areas with a large increase in forces in the eastern part of the alliance, on land, in the air and at sea. The first step is to deploy four new NATO battle groups in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. “We are determined to do everything we can to support Ukraine, but NATO has a responsibility to ensure that the war does not escalate beyond Ukraine.”
Stolteberg also spoke of the danger of Russia using chemical weapons, saying it would “completely change the nature of the conflict” in Ukraine.
“Tomorrow I expect the Allies to agree to provide additional support, including cyber security assistance, as well as equipment to assist Ukraine in protecting it against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats. I look forward to leaders calling on China to live up to its responsibilities as a member of the UN Security Council, to refrain from supporting Russia’s combat efforts, and to join the rest of the world in calling for an end to “immediate and peaceful of this war,” he said.
President Zelensky on the other hand used his speech in the Japanese parliament to warn of the dangers his country was facing from Russian attacks on nuclear power plants. US President Joe Biden, before leaving Washington for Europe, said that the threat of chemical weapons use by Russia against Ukraine was “real”.
