A senior Russian official has threatened that with nuclear weapons at Russia’s disposal, it could “flatten” Finland in 10 seconds and Britain in 200 seconds.
The head of the Defense Committee, Aleksey Zhuravlyov, made these statements a few days after Finland announced that it would apply to join NATO.
Earlier in the day, Vladimir Putin told the country’s president that he was making a “mistake” in applying to join NATO when the two leaders spoke on the phone.
Alexei Zhuravlyov said it was “absolutely legitimate” for Russia to “question the existence” of Finland. He was asked if Russia now needed to station its nuclear missiles including Sarmat – known in the West as Satan-2 – on the border with its neighbor.
“For what? “We do not need to,” he replied. “We can strike with a Sarmatian from Siberia and even reach as far as the United Kingdom.” And if we hit from Kaliningrad, the arrival time is 200 seconds, while in Finland it takes 10 seconds – so go on guys. ”
In response to Finland’s decision to join NATO, Russia also cut off electricity supplies.
However, Finnish President Sauli Ninisto told Putin that Finland would apply for NATO membership in the coming days. He told the Russian president that recent moves by Russia, along with the invasion of Ukraine, “have changed the security environment in Finland.”
