Although it has vowed not to send troops to Ukraine to avoid what it calls a “war for existence,” NATO has amassed a large contingent of troops in eastern Europe in a bid to further strengthen the entire region.
Thousands of air and sea forces have been sent to defend allied countries near Russia and Ukraine. The size of NATO combat groups in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia that were once ruled by Moscow but are now part of the European Union, have almost doubled since the beginning of the year, and their ranks are expected to increase even more.
In recent days, British troops have landed in Estonia, Norwegian troops have arrived in Lithuania, and France has launched elite units.
The United States recently increased its presence with 5,000 additional troops in Poland and Romania. It is NATO’s responsibility to ensure that the Ukraine conflict does not spiral out of control into a full-blown confrontation between NATO and Russia in Europe, said alliance leader Jens Stoltenberg; but we are on full alert, he added.
NATO’s most recent move was the creation of a battle group in Slovakia with 1,500 special forces troops, most of whom are foreign troops, as well as Patriot missile defense systems, maneuvered by German and Dutch personnel. German troops make up almost half of a NATO war group in Lithuania, which also includes soldiers from Belgium, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg.
The UK has already sent two frigates and a destroyer to NATO exercises with Merlin helicopters and RAF P8 Poseidon naval patrol aircraft in the eastern Mediterranean.
