NATO is launching additional forces and sending more warships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe, while Ireland has warned that new Russian combat games on its shores are not welcome.
The US-led military organization said it was strengthening its “preventive” presence in the Baltic Sea area. The background to these military actions is the fear of an invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which has amassed numerous troops on the border with the neighboring country.
The alliance statement clarifies that countries like Denmark, Spain and the Netherlands want to increase their military presence in eastern Europe, while the US and France have not yet decided. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the member states’ announcement. “NATO will continue to take all necessary measures to protect and defend all allies,” said the Norwegian.
