Jens Stoltenberg says NATO will deploy new combat groups in the central and southeastern regions within the alliance – like Romania – as part of its defense strategy against Russian aggression.
He says military commanders will work in detail and report in a few weeks and there will be ongoing discussions on how NATO’s defense can remain strong.
The Secretary-General says an additional $ 270 billion will be spent on defense.
The BBC’s Jonathan Beale asks Stoltenberg about the new battle groups and what Stoltenberg means by “new normal”.
He says the new normality is for Russia to test the principles underpinning European security, and says they have used force in an attempt to intimidate other countries in Europe into accepting Russian demands.
He says he is violating essential principles that have been relevant for decades.
“Russia has demonstrated a willingness to use force to try to coerce other countries and try to change some fundamental principles that are important to our common security,” he said.
He adds that this is why it is important to consider the long-term adjustments of NATO’s stay in the east.
