Dozens of fighter jets took off from a US aircraft carrier as part of a long-planned NATO exercise in the Mediterranean to demonstrate the alliance’s military strength as Russia continues its war in Ukraine.
“I want us to be ready.” told reporters during a visit aboard the USS Harry S. Truman, U.S. Admiral Curt Renshaw.
“We look at Russian capabilities and we look at our capabilities and then we train to oppose what they can do and to defend ourselves as well as to defend partners and allies. Look around you! “No one who would be wise would have the courage to attack us.” said the admiral.
The aircraft carrier is taking part in Operation Neptune Shield 2022, a NATO training activity in the Mediterranean and Baltic Sea this month involving forces from Italy, Poland and Turkey to Britain and the United States.
The aim is to overcome the difficulties of integrating command and control of air, sea and land assets from different countries into the NATO military alliance.
The operation has been on hold for nearly two years, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February has shed new light on the events.
USS Harry S. Truman is similar to a small floating town, and holds heavy combat assets.
