NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that so far there is no sign that Vladimir Putin is giving up his ambition to take control of all of Ukraine.
According to him the war could last for a longer time sec was intended.
“We have to be realistic, the war can last for a longer time, for months, maybe even years. That is why we have to be prepared and increase our defense and at the same time help Ukraine.”
The NATO chief made the remarks before entering a meeting with NATO foreign ministers, which was also attended by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Stoltenberg said that within a few weeks Russia could launch its attack on the entire Donbas region.
Meanwhile on the ground, US officials have confirmed that Russian troops have withdrawn from the suburbs of Kiev and Chernihiv, and that they have not yet managed to capture the city of Mariupol, although they have surrounded it. But fierce fighting has been reported in the city of Severodonetsk, in the Luhansk region where at least 10 buildings are said to have been hit by Russian missiles.
Meanwhile Ukrainian forces say they are on alert for the increase of Russian forces, as it is reported that they are preparing a major attack,
President Zelensky earlier on Wednesday accused the world of failing to end Russian aggression against his country and of what he described as a campaign of killings, rapes and destruction by Russian forces.
He accused Russia of using hunger as a weapon of war by deliberately hitting food infrastructure.
