The rover of the American space agency, Perseverance, has dismantled its wheels and embarked on its first voyage to Martian land.
However, he did not go very far and traversed a total of only 6.5 meters. But NASA experts say this was a significant moment.
“While the rover is continuing to do a lot of engineering checks, the moment it starts moving we can consider ourselves exploring the surface of Mars,” said NASA scientist Katie Stack Morgan.
It has been two weeks since NASA’s one-ton robot made its dramatic landing on the red planet. Engineers have spent time programming the tool and its very complex systems, including the instruments it holds and the robotic arm.
Everyone, however, has been waiting impatiently for Perseverance to start the movement. And that happened on Thursday. The robot walked forward a few feet, turned a 150-degree angle, and then walked back a little further. We can see the traces the wheels have left in March. “I do not think we can be happier than that,” said the engineers.
Perseverance landed in a crater near the equator of Mars, called Jezero, to seek there evidence of a life in the past. He will explore about 15km next March, which is equivalent to two years on earth.
