The classic toy brand is already being considered for the modern consumer, its American manufacturer Hasbro announced on Thursday.
By the end of this year, the toy that started selling about 70 years ago will be called the Potato Head on the packaging. Other toy companies have made similar decisions in recent years, violating traditional gender norms. “Hasbro is making sure everyone feels welcome in the world of Potato Head by officially removing the ‘Lord’ title from the brand name and logo Mr. “Potato Head to promote gender equality and inclusion.” said Hasbro about the name change.
The remodeled toy, which can be assembled with a selection of different body parts and clothes, will come out in the fall of this year, Hasbro said. The company said that the toys will allow children “to imagine and create their own Potato Chairman family“.
Mr. Potato Head was one of the main characters in Toy Story, a series of animated films produced by Pixar and published by Walt Disney Pictures. In an interview with Fast Company business magazine, Hasbro general manager Kimberly Boyd said the brand Mr. and Mrs. was “restrictive when it comes to gender identity and family structure. “Culture has evolved.”
Mr. Potato Head first went on sale in 1952. Following its success, Ms. The Potato Head, along with traditional girly accessories, was launched the following year.
Changes have been made to other classic brands, including Barbie, which was originally conceived to be tall, white and blonde but now comes in a variety of ethnicities and body shapes.
In 2019, global toy giant Mattel produced a line of gender-neutral dolls.
