A mother of four from Chicago in the US was among 20 people massacred by drug cartel fire at a clandestine turkey betting event in western Mexico on Sunday.
Melissa Silva, 36, was one of three women killed when bandits attacked a bar in the town of Zinapecuaro.
The woman leaves behind four children aged 10, 12, 17 and 18 years.
Her sister, 16-year-old Arleth Silva, was injured at the scene and is fighting for her life, reports the Univision network.
Yalitza Silva said her two sisters were on holiday with their mother in their home country, despite a warning US authorities had issued for travel to the Michoacán region from the violence of crime and hostage-taking.
“I did not imagine she would be one of my sisters,” said Yalitza Silva, adding that their mother had stayed at the hotel and rushed to the scene when she heard gunshots and found Melissa Silva’s dead body.
The attackers appeared to have planned the attack well, coming in a van of a food company, according to prosecutors.
“Several people armed with military camouflage clothes got out of the food company truck. “At the same time, a bus outside the building was used as a blockade to stop the victims from leaving or calling the police,” said the Michoacán prosecutor.
Mexican federal authorities attributed the massacre to “a confrontation between criminal groups.”
Michoacán investigators had found at the crime scene over 100 7.62 caliber cartridges
They also found 15 vehicles belonging to the victims, one of which had the logo of a local criminal group.
Michoacán has long been the scene of clashes between local crime cartels and the most influential group in Jalisco. Bombs, drones, mines and armored vehicles were used in the fighting.
Turkey fights are illegal in many areas, but remain a favorite pastime in Mexico, especially in the west of the country.
In 2018, six people were killed by when gunmen opened fire on a similar gathering in Chihuahua.
