Russia has warned that Finland and Sweden’s long-awaited bid to join NATO would lead to “militarization” of the region and that Moscow would respond if NATO deployed nuclear weapons near its borders.
Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Russia knows NATO wants to militarize everything it can.
A journalist for a Russian newspaper said Grushko had also expressed that NATO enlargement would provoke a political reaction from Russia, which would be based on a thorough analysis of the situation.
Sweden and Finland are expected to attend a NATO summit today as guests, with their decision on whether to apply expected in the coming days.
