Historian Evan Mawdsley, who specializes in Russian history and the history of World War II, has said that the Moscow ship is the first warship Russia has lost since World War II.
The last time a Russian warship sank was 81 years ago off the coast of Crimea from Germany during World War II. He added that while Russia had lost other types of warships during the course of World War II, Chernova was the last Russian warship to sink in 1941.
Professor Mawdsley added that although Moscow was nearly 40 years old, it was one of the largest ships in the Russian Navy and that no new large surface ship has been built since the 1980s.
Assuming Moscow was hit and damaged by a relatively small Neptune missile, the event informs that the ship had poor missile defense and poor damage control.
