Albania is in a demographic crisis. For the first time, last year the number of deaths exceeded that of births. According to Instat, natural increase turned out to be negative in 2021 with over 3200 more deaths than births across the country.
Since 1923, when demographic censuses were conducted for the population in the country, births have been higher than deaths, making Albania have a positive natural increase in population.
Referring to the data of the Institute of Statistics in 1990, this indicator reached 63.9 thousand births more than loss of life.
But since then this indicator has come into significant contraction as fertility has seen steady decline. The sharpest decline has been recorded in the last two decades, after 2000 onwards, when the alarm bell had already rung.
In that period, natural increase was estimated at 34.8 thousand births more than deaths continuing the downward trend over the years until the end of 2020, which would be the last year when births would dominate over deaths with 470 births more than losses jete.
Until that period, Albania would be characterized by positive natural supplements. The state’s efforts to boost the birth rate through various policies such as the last one for the baby bonus seem to have been insufficient, as indicators that would change completely last year where deaths would exceed births for the first time .
This situation is stated in the latest publication of Instat has been greatly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, where in the last two years alone, from the period of the pandemic launch until the end of 2021, a total of over 51,900 deaths have been recorded in all over the country.
Last year over 30,580 people lost their lives, the highest figure recorded according to Instat. Referring to the data, the mortality rate has started to increase significantly after 2001 and onwards to already reach this record mortality figure.
