The withdrawal of support to the minority government by the main political force in Montenegro is causing numerous reactions in the public opinion.
The President of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, in the meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart on Monday, announced the holding of early parliamentary elections as a result of the approval of the basic agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Analysts and civil society said about the basic agreement, approved by the Montenegrin government, that “there are a number of legal anomalies that violate the secular character of the state”.
Meanwhile, the Montenegrin Prime Minister, Dritan Abazovic, estimated in a post on Twitter that “the position of the majority will be decisive for the future of the government.”
The Democratic Socialist Party (PDS) of the current president Milo Djukanovic announced on Sunday that the minority government of Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic has lost the support of this party due to the vote in favor of the basic agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The PDS stated that the government had changed its political course and “hastily, irresponsibly and without consultation with the professional public concluded the contract with the Serbian Orthodox Church, which caused incalculable damage to the state interests of Montenegro”.
Prime Minister Dritan Abazović reacted through social media.
“We will see what the attitude of the majority of deputies will be. Montenegro must move forward. Crime, corruption and nationalism are not options. The European future will win,” Abazović said in a tweet.
The Montenegrin President, Milo Djukanovic, in the meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart, Rumen Radev, said that “the possible fall of the government may slow down the EU integration process, but we cannot tolerate irresponsibility towards national interests”.
At the press conference, Mr. Djukanovic presented the idea of holding early elections in Montenegro.
The majority of ministers present at the government meeting on Friday voted in favor of the proposed agreement on the basic agreement with the Serbian Orthodox Church.
Disputes between the state of Montenegro and the Serbian Orthodox Church began in 2006 with the independence of this state. The Serbian Orthodox Church, according to analysts, remains under the influence of the politics of Belgrade and Moscow.
In addition to unresolved property issues, analysts say the Serbian church has repeatedly meddled politically in Montenegrin affairs, including organizing protests ahead of elections that ousted Mr. Djukanovic’s ruling allies in 2020.
Analysts and civil society in Montenegro have pointed out a number of legal anomalies, from the fact that some provisions are contrary to the positive regulation of Montenegro to the statement that this agreement violates the secular character of the state, guaranteed by constitution./VOA
