Full message:
Dear brothers and sisters,
For this year’s Christmas party, I would like to ask permission to enter the home of each of you to whom this message will reach.
I do it with the delicacy of someone who does not want to disturb the family peace, even though I know that my intervention will be a cause of embarrassment for someone anyway. Accustomed to how we are with Christmas poetry, it is inappropriate to think that it can be broken.
Perhaps so it was for those inmates who did not want to lose customers because of the cries of a child who would be born in a few minutes if they had accepted Joseph and Mary into their guesthouse. So it may have been for those poor animals who rested quietly in the stable when their sleep was disturbed by the opening of the door through which the pregnant Joseph and Mary entered. And why not, it must have been the same for the shepherds, frightened by the twinkling of the angelic light announcing the birth of a child. And what concern must have been for Herod, who was horrified by the loss of his kingdom, because of the dethronement of a newborn baby!
Every Christmas is like that for each of us when we think of celebrating, no matter why we celebrate. It is so true that we call it the “end-of-year festivities” because it is inappropriate to accept that the reason we decorate, illuminate, give, and receive gifts is the birth of Jesus Christ.
Of course, if he had remained a child forever, we would have been happier, and the event, as such, would have been more welcome: after all, we become softer when we think of the birth of a new creature. But this Child no: it’s different! To look at his mother’s lap is like watching her come down from the cross and surrender to the arms of the Painful Lady; to see him resting in the manger of a stable in the rock is like seeing him perched in the tomb made in the rock.
This Child was born to die, like all of us! He was born to give annoyance to the evil that dwells in the hearts of men and to give us freedom, the prisoners of evil. To look at this Child is unpleasant, because He is the Word that cuts like a double-edged sword to tear and bring to light our truth.
Yes, Jesus is all of that! But there is also One who eats and drinks with sinners, who forgives prostitutes, who pours oil and wine on the wounds of the unfortunate traveler, and then puts him on his shoulder to give him a home. He is the good shepherd who goes in search of the lost sheep, who heals only that one believes in Him. It is also He who reveals to us the true face of God, all Goodness and Mercy.
My wish, therefore, as well as the reason why I allow myself to enter into the intimacy of your believing and unbelieving families, is that this Christmas be lived with the courage to accept the reason for the feast, which is the birth of Jesus. Christ, the Son of God, God Himself, who takes our human nature to make it new, restoring it to its original innocence.
We are not afraid to welcome Christ! Even if our conscience can tremble before His message, know that He is there ready to forgive and welcome each of us, revealing to us once again the merciful face of God. Therefore, let us not allow this holiday to be lived once again as pagans: let us take this opportunity to allow the Child of Bethlehem to enter our homes, our lives, our human relationships, our workplaces, our culture , of science. He who has come only for our good can not do wrong.
It is wealth for families with many children, comfort for couples who may not have it, forgiveness for those who have denied a child the right to be born.
He is the guarantee of a healthy growth, in age, wisdom and grace before God and before the people of all children, adolescents and young people.
He is the defender of workers’ rights and a model of justice for those who can offer a job to those who do not have it.
He is the “Wise Creator” who bestows every wisdom and every science on all those who are committed to making this world better with culture, science, arts.
He is the “mighty miracle worker” who heals the soul and has the power to heal the bodies as well; support for all the sick and the elderly.
He is the “admirable advisor” who finds the right place in the countries where the legislative, judicial and executive powers are exercised.
He is the “Eternal High Priest,” a sure guide for all who have dedicated their lives to God and to their brothers and sisters as revivers of religious communities.
My congratulations reach all of you: Catholics, Orthodox, Christians and people of good will, may it really be a holy Christmas with the sincere and courageous hospitality of Jesus Christ in our lives.
The blessing of the Child of Bethlehem descend abundantly upon you all.
