A tourist boat collided with a giant humpback whale that lifted it into the air and then released it to the surface injuring five passengers, one of them in serious condition.
The incident occurred off the coast of Mexico where the boat soared into the air after accidentally hitting the whale’s back.
Five tourists were injured in the unusual collision, three of whom remained in hospital and one with more serious injuries.
Passengers had been lifted into the air when the boat collided with the giant whale and authorities said they were investigating why the drivers had not kept a safe distance from the animal.
Local civil defense distributed footage of the incident where tourists appeared to be crashing into the boat tent after the crash.
Spokesman Benjamin Garcia told local media that the boat operators may not have known about the whale’s presence.
“Three people were hospitalized, one of them is in serious condition, the other two were treated by the port authorities.”
Garcia added that the Mexican navy came quickly to provide assistance by sending tourists to medical centers, while the incident will be investigated by the general prosecution.
It is not clear if the whale was injured in the collision but the investigation is aimed at whether the boat operator made a mistake with the speed limits during the event.
Whale cruise tourism is one of the main attractions in the Baja region and such collisions have started to accelerate over the years, especially in the warm and nutritious waters that make whale destinations quite popular.
