President Maia Sandu on Thursday said Moldova has opened its borders to all Ukrainian citizens who want to transit or need safe housing.
Through a Twitter post, Sandu says the first Ukrainian citizens have arrived in Moldova, marking this Thursday a figure of 4,000 people crossing the border.
She points out that the Moldovan government has set up some temporary reception centers near Palanca and Ocnita.
“Our borders are open to all Ukrainian citizens who need transit or a secure stay,” said the Moldovan president.
Earlier, Sandu considered Russian aggression against Ukraine a flagrant violation of international law and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of this country. She stressed that as a neutral state, Moldova is ready to help citizens for their humanitarian needs.
Vladimir Putin ordered the start of the offensive in Ukraine at 5:55 a.m. Moscow time, and the first grenades and rockets were fired just minutes later. Emergency sirens sounded in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
Terrified, people rushed to leave. A large number of cars were seen on the streets, as panic engulfed the residents of Kiev.
Those who did not leave hurried to the basements, while Kiev metro stations are also reportedly turning into makeshift bunkers. Eyewitnesses told CNN that subway stations were overcrowded, taking large quantities of food with them. “The stations are full,” said a Kiev resident. Despair has gripped residents in other areas as well, such as the city of Chuguev, where Russian bombing has destroyed homes and a lifeless body lying on the street covered with blankets.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced earlier that Russia had carried out missile attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure and on border guards. Through a Twitter post, he said he has talked to Western allies and called on them to help the country with defense and finances.
Some Ukrainian cities are already under cyber attack; a number of Websites have crashed while there are also communication difficulties.
