Today, in the premises of the 9-year school “Abdyl Paralloi” in Elbasan was held the Teacher Network Presentation Ceremony (TeacherNet), within the project of the Council of Europe “Strengthening Education for Democratic Citizenship in Albania”, i funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
The event, which took place on the eve of March 7, Teacher’s Day, was attended by the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Evis Kushi, the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Tirana Jutta Gützkow, the Ambassador of Sweden to Albania Elsa Håstad, the Lawyer of People Erinda Ballanca, Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination Robert Gajda, teachers of education of democratic citizenship and humanities, representatives of civil society, etc.
The activity aimed to recognize and appreciate the role of teachers in promoting education for democratic citizenship and human rights, which prepare students to be active and worthy citizens in a democratic society.
In her welcoming speech, Minister Evis Kushi first thanked the organizers for the development of this activity in Elbasan. According to her, this is not because she is from Elbasan, but because Elbasan has a strong and early connection with education.
“As you know, in 1909 the first high school in the Albanian language was established, which has trained for many years extraordinary teachers, who have given a contribution to the education of generations” – she said.
Expressing gratitude to partners such as the Council of Europe and AIDS for this project, Minister Kushi also touched on the importance he has in evaluating the image of the teacher: “Today, 21st century teachers educate students with the most feelings and values. good for citizenship and democracy, as well as for human rights. “Our teachers not only teach knowledge to students in different disciplines, but also educate them with very high values of citizenship and democracy.”
Meanwhile, Minister Kushi highly appreciated the role of teachers during this period, where according to her: “We are all witnesses that teachers are our heroes, with the extraordinary work they are doing. They are on the front line of sacrifice. We parents saw very well how important the work of the teacher is, how valuable their work is. The students, on the other hand, appreciated the contribution of the teachers even more “.
Among other things, she also said that it is very important to continue working to elevate the image of the teacher, as she said that during all these years we have worked intensively on this aspect:
“First, we decided that the best students, or the best graduates will be those who go for the teacher, setting the average grade as a criterion. Because we all want teachers to be the best. For the employment of teachers, we have established transparency and meritocracy through the portal ‘Teachers for Albania’. As well as increasing teachers’ salaries. We have increased them 3 times in the last years, but I am sure that the teachers deserve even more and this will be our attention in the coming years as well “, added the Minister.
Among other things, she also stressed that: “A very important challenge remains the further qualification of teachers, their professional skills and training. I thank our partners such as the Council of Europe, “UNICEF Albania”, “Save the Children” and many other organizations that are helping us in this period to train teachers about the new technology and skills required by reality and challenges. current ”.
