About 600 migrants were rescued at sea this morning about 100 km from Calabria, said the Italian coast guard.
The large ship Diciotti and three Coast Guard boats took part in the rescue operation of 573 migrants, including one who had lost his life.
The migrants were in two trawlers overcrowded with people battling the rough waves of the sea, the coast guard announced.
The rescuers headed to the Sicilian port of Augusta where refugees and migrants landed at reception centers, the coast guard said.
Winter has been a hindrance but the cold weather and harsh sea have not stopped the dangerous crossings of migrants in the Mediterranean.
This year alone, 10,570 refugees or migrants have reached Europe by sea, while 1,400 have attempted to enter by land or air, according to the International Organization for Migration.
