Known as one of the “ugliest” animals in the world, it is in fact the largest producer of milk and meat on farms in Syria and most of the Middle East.
Also known as the “Damascus goat,” this particular breed is recommended by the UN agriculture agency as one of the most productive animals to be bred. Despite her monstrous appearance she has helped thousands of people in Syria survive the war as well as restore peace to the country.
The Damascus goat also known as Aleppo, Baladi, Damascene, Shami, or Chami, is a crossed species originating from Syria, which was then imported to Cyprus by the British, where its qualities were improved by crossing.
Such an animal has won the encouraging prize “The Most Beautiful Goat in the World” in the Mazayen al-Maaz competition in Riyadh in 2008.
