The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said during a visit to Montenegro that “the EU is united in imposing sanctions on Russia and that the pressure is ensured by the continuation of six packages of sanctions.”
He thanked Montenegro for its stance on the crisis in Ukraine and its harmonization with EU foreign policy.
“The Western Balkans is a strategic partner of the EU. “Montenegro has been a partner of the EU for decades and has been fully in line with EU foreign policy for more than ten years, which shows your commitment to European integration,” Michel told a news conference. press release in Podgorica on Tuesday, following a meeting with Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic.
Mr. Michel stressed that the Western Balkans today remains a strategic priority of the EU.

Mr. Michel said that Montenegro must meet the criteria for the functioning of the rule of law.
“The next step is to meet the interim criteria in the field of rule of law, which will give it new energy and enable Montenegro to move forward. Next week I will host a meeting of the leaders of the 27 EU member states with the leaders of the Western Balkans. “We stand by your region,” said Mr Michel.
Mr Michel expressed confidence that Montenegro “would make further progress in the coming weeks”.
Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic said the meeting was an opportunity to point out that Montenegro, through the events of the past two years, has proven to be a functioning parliamentary democracy.
“The second thing we talked about was the situation in the region. “I reiterated that the stability of the Western Balkans equals integration, and that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine highlighted the growing need for European integration,” Djukanovic said.
Mr Djukanovic said Russia was damaging relations with Europe and was “trying in every way possible to strengthen political forces based on Euroscepticism”.
According to Mr Djukanovic, Montenegro needs to meet key priorities, such as the rule of law.
“This would send a good signal that enlargement policy is alive,” Djukanovic said.
“It is important to understand that the membership of the Western Balkan countries in the EU means geopolitical security,” the Montenegrin president added./VOA
