Willi Weber, the former manager of the ill-fated Formula 1 champion, has said today that the family of Michael Schumacher have not told the whole truth about the sports icon.
Weber has criticized the world champion’s family for keeping his condition a secret since the serious accident he suffered during a skiing holiday in the French Alps.
Schumacher’s health status has remained one of the best-kept secrets since the horrific crash in 2013, after which it was only known that the driver fell into a coma for six months. – and then only with small enigmatic reports from the family of Schumacher or the former head of Ferrari, Jean Todt.
Weber said, among other things, that he is not satisfied with the way he was excluded from the information after the accident.
“It was a great pain for me,” he told the daily through a translator Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I have tried hundreds of times to contact his wife Corinna and she has not answered. I called Jean Todt to ask if I can go to the hospital, but he says it’s still early.”
“I did not expect such behavior and I am angry. They keep me out, tell me it’s too early when in fact it’s too late. It’s been nine years, maybe it’s time to tell the truth.”
Weber says he initially understood the family’s requests for privacy but now sees it as an attempt to maintain distance between them and a figure who has been central to Schumacher’s competitive career.
“I have always tried to protect Michael’s private life,” Weber said.
“But since I’ve only heard lies from them, it hurts me because I can’t change things. He was like a son to me, even today it hurts me to talk.”
It is not known whether Weber’s plea for public information will have any effect with Schumacher’s heirs as there have been several such requests over the years.
